課程概述

This is an advance course in Mandarin Chinese for students who have taken at least four years of college-level Chinese instruction or the equivalent elsewhere, and who already possess the ability to fluently communicate with others in various contexts in both speaking and writing. Classes are held three days a week, with 2 sessions of synchronous group classes.
This class is designed to help students acquire knowledge of spoken and written Chinese and to assist them in gaining proficiency and accuracy using these skills in Academic presentations, debates and real-life situations. The curriculum emphasizes developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, especially regarding topics of academic concerns.

課程目標
By completing this course, students are expected to reach an oral proficiency that is equivalent to or higher than Advanced level, and at the same time, to have a good command of Chinese in formal reading and writing. Students can conduct communication tasks independently.

More specifically, they can demonstrate the following skills:

• Comprehending short to long authentic spoken and written discourses of academic and formal topics in different styles.
• Readiness for independent study of Chinese society and culture.
• Making well-organized and culturally appropriate oral and written presentations in a formal or semi-formal style.
• Communicating with others in Chinese at a natural speed.
• Knowing enough cultural and societal information about Taiwan to ensure smooth communication and comparison.
• Having strategies for independent Chinese learning.
課程要求
This class employs a “flipped” approach. The teacher will prepare and share online worksheets and audio or video files in advance for students to prepare for in-class discussion. Students are expected to preview the assigned materials before they attend the class.

Exams:
There will be Two exams(a mid-term and a final exam). All tests will be given only on the assigned days. There will be no make-up test unless the student has a valid reason and notify the instructor in advance. The tests will be all in traditional characters.

Assignments:
Workbook (Required): Assignments from the workbook will be graded. Students are expected to do the exercises all by themselves. Late assignments will not be accepted, unless a medical or official excuse is provided in advance of the class.
Students also may have recording/ listening homework, students should upload these homework to NTU Cool.

Attendance:
Attendance at all classes is required and is important. Unless a medical or official excuse is provided (for absences more than twice a week, doctor’s note or Dean’s excuse is needed.), 0.25 points will be deducted from your total grade for each missed class. Being late three times will be counted as one absence. Any form of field trip of other classes can have two times absences without deduction.
If students have to miss a class, they must email to your instructor in advance of the class. Tests cannot be made up unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. Make-up work has to be done by the next class meeting day.

Participation:
Students are expected to preview the materials before class, and review them after class on a daily basis. Previewing the vocab., and the grammars doesn’t take very long but it will help students learn so much faster in class and be able to participate more. Fully engaging in conversations and activities in Chinese is the best way to learn! Students’ class performance grade takes into account the effort to speak in Chinese and students’ active participation in class.
